PURPOSE:To adjust always the outside circumferential surface of the shell of a water- cooled drum to a straight cylindrical shape during operation and to produce a thin sheet having a uniform wall thickness by controlling the pressurization of cooling water to change the shape of the outside circumferential surface of said shell. CONSTITUTION:The outside circumferential surface of the shell 2 which is preliminarily formed into an hourglass shape in the outside circumferential surface is heated by a molten steel during operation and on the other hand, the inside surface thereof is cooled by cooling water. The outside circumferential surface is maintained approximately in the straight cylindrical shape by the temp. difference between the inside and outside surfaces thereof even if external force is not exerted thereto. The thickness in the central part of the thin sheet is automatically measured and the shape of the outside circumferential surface of the shell 2 is changed by the controlled pressure of the cooling water so as to be maintained always in the straight cylindrical shape when the set temp. difference is not obtd. as a result of a change in operating conditions, etc. and when the outside circumferential surface of the shell 2 is not maintained in the straight cylindrical shape. The shape of the rolled product in the rolling mill of the succeeding stage is thus stabilized and the quality thereof is improved. |
