The vessel which contains the bed is designed so that (a) the fluid can be supplied to and removed from the bed and (b) there is good heat conduction between the bed and the heat support medium for removing and supplying heat. The fluid flows through hollow perforated elements which project through the bed into the space above it. They can be elastically deformed to compensate for swelling of the bed material and to permit the maximum rate of diffusion. Pref. metal hydride reactions which work with hydrogen as the fluid, and with a metal alloy, e.g. LaNi5 as the bed material. |
