<p>A composite crushable energy absorber has an energy absorbing sleeve (12). This being made of a composite material. The sleeve is arranged to axially relieve the force exerted, it is supported on an anvil (14), and has an upper sleeve cap (16) to which the force is applied. The element is progressively crushed. The sleeve is pref. in the form of a tube of fibre reinforced plastics such as graphite, boron or epoxy resin impregnated fibre glass. The fibres of the tube may be arranged at angles to the tube's axis to vary its crushability.</p> |
