The valve has an electromagnet including a core (19) and a yoke (21), an armature (23) with an auxiliary mass (22) and a valve body which is operated by the armature. The mass of the valve body is smaller than that of the armature and is not fixed to the armature, so that the power from the armature is only effective in one direction on the valve. Before the start of the operational movement of the armature, it is held at rest by an armature return spring (28), although the retentional power of the return spring arrangement is only a fraction of the saturation inductive force. The armature movement begins as soon as the magnetic power exceeds the power of the return spring, and the armature strikes the needle valve (33) at a relatively high speed at about 30 percent of the armature stroke. A part of the work carried out to open the needle valve results from the kinetic energy of the armature and the parts connected to it.
