A fuel consumption indicating device for a motor vehicle is arranged to indicate the current fuel consumption relative to a norm determined by a microprocessor 6 on the basis of the sensed fuel supply rate and engine rotational rate and the indicated prevailing traffic conditions. A microprocessor 6 is arranged to receive signals from the fuel flow sensor 4 and engine rotational rate sensor 7, and also from preselection input means 11 operable manually whereby respective signals may be supplied to the microprocessor according to whether or how the manually operable selection means has been operated to indicate prevailing traffic conditions. A display indicator 12 is controlled by the microprocessor 6. A distance sensor 8 may also be incorporated.
