PURPOSE:To obtain a heat developable photosensitive material capable of forming an image high in density, yet low in fog and superior in stability with lapse of time by using as a basic precursor a polymer having, on the side chains, functional groups releasing a basic component by heat decomposition. CONSTITUTION:The heat developable photosensitive material is prepared by incorporating in a silver halide emulsion layer a homo- or co-polymer having repeating units represented by the formula as the precursor in which each of R1, R2, R3 is independently H, 1-6C alkylene, CN, NO2, aryl, or the like; L is 1-20C alkylene, phenylene, aralkylene, -CONH-R5-; R6 is alkylene, phenylene, or the like; M is an ion of alkali metal, such as Na or K, quaternary ammonium, guanidine, or the like. Said polymer precursor is decarboxylated at 80- 250 deg.C for few seconds to release a basic component, thus permitting a superior image high in density and low in fog to be obtained and its performance hardly deteriorated during long period storage before development.
