To kiln or dry germinated cereal grain material which successively passes batchwise through treatment zones lying one above the other, the grain material is conducted through the treatment zone in a constant upwards movement in such a manner that the relative position of the grain material layers to each other are maintained during this movement. A thin, uniform, and continuous layer thickness is then withdrawn over the entire layer width and removed. This removal is performed by lowering the layer into the intermediate space in the angle of repose.
