A device and a method are used to measure the flow rate of a liquid. Measurement is made of the height of a level of the liquid in an upstream space of an overflow (34) through which the liquid flows. The flow rate is established from a predetermined relationship, depending on the shape of the overflow (34), between the height of the level and the flow rate at the overflow (34). In order to achieve a measurement error that is independent of the absolute height of the liquid level, the width of the overflow (34) is dimensioned as a function of the height in such a way that the ratio of an increase or reduction in flow rates to the total flow rate is constant, irrespective of the height of the level in the measurement region. <IMAGE>
