The characteristic feature in this case is that the material flows participating in the heat exchange can pass the flow gaps 21, 32 between the plates 3, 4 in an unhindered freeflow. In order to enable the end plates which are used to clamp the plate assembly to be constructed as simply as possible, two differently profiled plates 3, 4 are provided which are installed alternately in sequence. Given a purely metallic contact of the adjacent heat exchanging plates 3, 4, flow gaps 21, 32 of large flow cross-section can be achieved by serially, stamped support surfaces 29, bearing surfaces 25, contact surfaces 30 and mating surfaces 28. Since the stampings 25, 28-30 remain in the range of thickness of the sealing elements 14 on the circumferential side, at least in the case of one plate 3, no stampings 25, 28-30 or transverse grooves 20 project transversely. The end plates can therefore be constructed flat. <IMAGE>
