Lettuces are highly sensitive foods which, in the absence of additional measures, within the course of half an hour to a few hours become unattractive or even inedible. In order to be able to produce and distribute lettuces of this type industrially, a storage life of at least 14 days is required. In order to achieve at least this storage life, according to the invention an apparatus is proposed in which beneath the outlet of a vibrating trough (2) and within a filling funnel (4), there is arranged at least one metering balance (5), the vibrating trough (2) being surrounded by a cover (3) extending up to the filling funnel (4) or overlapping the trough and one nozzle array (8, 11) each, arranged above the vibrating trough (2) and the filling funnel (4), being provided for ejecting cold protective gas. <IMAGE>
