To secure a piston ring axially and in a play-free manner in an annular groove in a piston, particularly in the case of piston rings, the axial extent of which is a multiple of the wall thickness of the ring, a plastic deformation which brings about an axial elongation is carried out after the installation of the piston ring in the annular groove. This is achieved by providing the piston ring, after installation in the annular groove, with at least one indentation, which has the effect of producing an axial elongation of the piston ring and hence play-free contact with the end faces of the annular groove.
