Xanthines of the formula <IMAGE> or physiologically acceptable salts thereof, where R1 is C2-C4-alkyl, C3-C4-isoalkyl, CH2-(C2-C3-alkenyl) or CH2- (C3-isoalkenyl), R3 is C3-C5-alkyl, C3-C5-isoalkyl, CH2- (C2-C4-alkenyl) or CH2-(C3-C4-isoalkenyl), and R8 is H, methyl or ethyl, with the provisos that 1) when R8 is H, R1 is allyl, and 2) R1 and R3 are not simultaneously butyl or allyl, are prepared by means of a number of different processes. The compounds possess sedative activity which is nonspecific or has an anxiolytic character.
