A continuously variable transmission 10 has at least one pair 11 of conical friction discs with gently tapering friction faces 21, 22 and an all-round wedge-shaped gap K. The axes a, b of rotation, situated in the same plane, of the conical fricton discs 12, 13, which are coupled rotationally to one another, extend at a very small angle alpha to one another. The exiting strand Ta of a link chain 23 having struts 26 is guided under no load out of the wedge-shaped gap K in a region Qmax of relatively large transverse width. The entering strand Te of the chain 23 is guided under no load into the wedge-shaped gap K, likewise in the region Qmax of relatively large transverse width, its radial distance R from the axes a, b of rotation of the discs being adjustable via guide means 28. The struts 26 of the chain 23 are held fast with maximum clamping force between the friction faces 21, 22 in the region of the smallest transverse width Qmin of the wedge-shaped gap K. This region of the chain 23, frictionally connected to the friction faces 21, 22, meshes with a gearwheel 29, the distance of which from the axes a, b of rotation of the discs can be set as a function of the radial position of the chain 23 in the wedge-shaped gap K. <IMAGE>
