METHOD FOR THE ANAEROBIC DEGRADATION OF ORGANIC MATERIAL

Org. compds. in wastewater were anaerobically degraded by passage through a contact reactor and a fluidized bed reactor contg. a finely divided soilid inert bed supporting a primarily anaerobic bacterial population and part or all of the treated dffluent was recycled back to the contact reactor. The anaerobic bacterial population was established by passing wastewateer contg. org. compds. and NO3- through the reactor system until a primarily anoxic population was established and then gradually reducing the NO3- concn. until a majority of the anoxic bacteria was replaced by anaerobic bacteria.
