PROCESS FOR PREPARING 5,6-DIHYDRO-2-METHYL-N-PHENYL-1,4-OXATHIIN-3-CARBOXAMIDE AND INTERMEDIATES THEREOF

The title compd. is prepd. by reacting di(2-hydroxyethyl) disulfide with acetoacetanilide. The acetoacetanilide is in an ionized form. Di(2-hydroxyethyl)disulfide may be prepd. by the oxidn. of 2- mercaptoethanol with H2O2 or air. The title compd. is cyclized into 5,6-dihydro-2-methyl-N-phenyl-1,4-oxathiin-3- carboxamide, which is a known fungicide. By this process, costly and corrosive chlorinating agents, e.g. SO2Cl2, and chlorinated by-prods. are avoided.
