PURPOSE:To increase the transparency, water content and oxygen permeability by using a copolymer consisting essentially of specified two kinds of pyrrolidone monomers as highly hydrophilic monomers and alkyl methacrylate or acrylate as a reinforcing monomer. CONSTITUTION:A contact lens is made of a copolymer consisting essentially of N-methyl-3-methylene-2-pyrrolidone (MMP) represented by formula I and N-vinyl- 2-pyrrolidone (VP) as hydrophilic monomers and alkylmethacrylate or acrylate (AMA or AAA) as the reinforcing monomer. In the AMA or AAA, 1-3C and 8-18C alkyl groups are combinedly used in (1:3)-(3:1) weight ratio, the hydrophilic and reinforcing monomers are used in (50-50)-(95:5) weight ratio, and the N-MMP and N-VP are used in (1:3)-(3:1) weight ratio. The resulting contact lens has a high water content without deteriorating the optical characteristics by combinedly using the hydrophilic monomers. The lens also has favorable dynamic characteristics, high dimensional stability and oxygen permeability, so it causes no trouble even after long period wear. |
