DEHALOGENATION OF OXIDIC ZINC-BEARING MATERIALS

A method for the dehalogenation of oxidized zinc-bearing materials for the extraction of a major portion of contained chloride and fluoride by leaching which comprises forming a reaction slurry of a mixture of said materials, sodium carbonate and water, said sodium carbonate being present in an amount sufficient to maintain the pH of the reaction slurry at a value above about 7, agitating the reaction slurry for a period of time in the range of about 10 minutes to 8 hours, and separating the solids fraction from the liquid fraction for the recovery of the solids fraction as a dehalogenated oxidic zinc-bearing material. The reaction slurry preferably contains oxidic zinc-bearing materials in an amount of from 15 to 25% by weight of the slurry and the leaching preferably is carried out at a pH in the range of about 8.5 to 9.0 at ambient temperatures.
