1530624 Prosthetic implant FELDMUHLE AG 29 Oct 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 44743/75 Heading A5R The ball part of a hip joint endoprosthesis comprises a ceramic ball 2 with a tapering bore 3 which receives a tapering peg 5 on a metal shank 1, a space 6 being left between the base of bore 3 and the tip of peg 5, the ball being of a sintered oxide ceramic having an aluminium oxide content of at least 99.7%, a specific gravity of at least 3.9 and a particle size of at most 10Ám, the tapering cones both having a taper ratio of 1:10 to 1:20, and the surface of the peg 5 which engages the bore 3 being deformable by pressure and/or heat and/or the surface of the bore 3 which engages the peg 5 having a deforming effect on the surface of the peg 5. Shank 1, including peg 5, is of a malleable alloy and is hollow the outer wall of the cone being 2-7mm thick and thus deformable by pressure during thermal sterilisation or by mechanical forces. The surface of peg 5 has shallow depressions (11) forming a lattice, Fig. 2 (not shown) or has grooves (10), Fig. 3, (not shown). The surface of bore 3 may be ground with undulations (12), Fig. 4 (not shown) which cause surface deformation of the peg 5 and permit thermal sterilisation of the assembled prosthesis. The surface of bore 3 may be made deformable by metallizing by one or more medically acceptable metals.
|
