PURPOSE:To prevent the deterioration in function of a filter by providing perpendicularly a perforated plate or a corrugated perforated plate parallel to a filter medium in the front face of inflow surface of the filter medium layer and providing the space for accumulating activated sludge. CONSTITUTION:One end of the inside of vessel of a main body 1 is partitioned at right angles for the flow direction by providing a perforated plate 4 perpendicularly to provide an inflow chamber A between the plate 4 and the wall surface. The part between the plate 4 and the wall surface of the other end is partitioned by providing perpendicularly the perforated plates 5, 5' parallel to the plate 4 and the space layers D, C are left back and forth and a filter medium layer B is formed by packing a filter medium 6 and a perforated plate 4' is perpendicularly provided in the space layer D to provide a flow passage space A'. An inflow pipe 2 communicating with a circulation pump is perpendicularly provided in the inflow chamber A and an inflow port 8 is opened to the part close to the bottom surface. The space layer C is used as a discharge chamber by providing a discharge pipe 3 therein and the space layer D is used as the space for accumulating the activated sludge. Water is flowed into the inflow chamber A through an inflow port 8 of inflow pipe 2 and passed through the filter medium layer B in the lateral direction and returned through the discharge port 3.
