Automatic utility meter reading system

The system sends interrogation signals and the monitored utility information over telephone lines, and receives the utility information from the lines. An apparatus (30) testing component parts of this system has a meter interface device (MID) simulator (36) and a utility monitor simulator (38) which are operable when testing the telephone line. A telephone line simulator (34) is capable simulating the line when testing the meter reading components. The receiving apparatus in the central office is simulated by a digital conversion simulator (40) and digital display (42), to test the combination of meter reading apparatus and line.
