An active hydrocarbon solid (I) used for defin polymn. is prepd. by (a) forming a homogeneous pulverulent mass, and (b) polymerising one or more 2-12C olefins in contact with this mass to produce (I) contg. 10-50,000 (50-15,000) ppm transition metal polymn. being in gaseous phase at a temp. below the m.pt. of (I), while maintaining the hourly conversion of the olefin(s) at below 500,000 g/g transition metal (pref. 10-100,000). - Specifically, step (a) comprises contacting (i) a transition metal cpd(s) of particle size 0.1-500 (1-250) micron, the metal being Ti, V, Zr or Cr; (ii) a powdery, solid (in)organic support and (iii) liq. phase contg. one or more Gp.(I) to (III) organometallic cpd(s) with the proviso that the ratio of the no. of Gp.(I) to (III) metal atoms to that of the transition metal is 0.1-800 (0.5-200) and the amt. of support powder is such that the produced mixt. remains pulverulent.
|
