An appliance for cutting limp flat material such as textiles, paper, rubber etc., has a cutting table (22) with a guided cutting tool (20) to cut the material along the line (P). The material is held down onto the cutting table by a vacuum generated by the vacuum pump (50). - The degree of vacuum is controlled by a valve (62) which is in turn controlled by a linear actuator (64). The position of the linear actuator is controlled by a vacuum sensing device.
