A strap (4) is wound around a parcel (2) etc. and then tied into a knot by a machine with a knot tying unit (6). A gripping and cutting device (7a) is mounted near the knot tying unit and lies in a plane parallel to the plane of the strap. - The gripping and cutting device consists of two grippers (12,13) which are mounted on a swivelable support (8) in such a way that they can swing in a plane at right angles to the plane of the strap. One gripper (13) is equipped with a blade to cut the strap after the finished knotting. The grippers are swung to and fro by a cam mounted on a horizontal drive shaft.
