PURPOSE:To prevent any separation of a lithium-aluminum alloy electrodeposited on the electrode surface which mighe occur during charging or discharging by using a plate-like negative electrode formed by compressing and molding fibers prepared by electrodepositing a lithium-aluminum alloy on the surface of metallic fibers. CONSTITUTION:A lithium-aluminum alloy containing 35-45mol% of lithium is vapor deposited on the surface of fibers having diameters of at most 0.1mu and made a metal into which lithium is not diffused such as nickel to form fibers having diameters of at most 0.25mu. The thus formed fibers are then compressed and molded into a plate. The reactive surface of a negative electrode formed by these fibers has a markedly large surface area and the negative electrode has a decreased true current density during charging and discharging. Furthermore, all components of the negativ electrode during charging and discharging are of the (alpha+beta) phase. Therefore, lithium is rapidly diffused in the negative electrode, lithium is not accumulated on the surface of the negative electrode and lithium is prevented from being separated from the surface. Additionally, the negative electrode contains a metallic core where lithium is not diffused and this metallic core acts as a current collector and also prevent any configurational change or cut of the fibers during charging and discharging. |
