Machining edges of non-circular ceramic workpieces

Ceramic workpieces (10) with non-circular edges are machined on a tool with a workpiece holder (22) which can be rotated about a vertical axis (A). The tool (68) is mounted on a holder (50) which is mounted on an intermediate holder (44) which is mounted on the bed of the machine tool. The intermediate holder is mounted on a support (42) which enables it to swing about the Vertical axis (B). The intermediate holder can slide on the guide bars (28), radially w.r.t. the workpiece (10). The upper holder can slide radially on the intermediate holder. Cams (24,26) with profiles corresponding to the workpiece profile, control the movements of the intermediate and upper holders. The intermediate holder has two cam followers (46), both of which are pressed against the cam (24).
