A pulsating hearth 13 for an incinerator where the hearth is supported by a fixed frame in order to be able to move in a limited, short arc on the hearth in a predetermined trajectory across the hearth. The movement is transmitted to the hearth by periodic pulses, preferably by inflating a number of air bags mounted on the frame, whereby the hearth is affected to move a short distance from its position of origin, following which it bumps against the frame and thus moves the burning pile forwards at each stroke, the hearth thereafter returning to its position of origin. The hearth may also have a plurality of nozzles connected to an air source for supplying an even air flow to the burning pile on the hearth. <IMAGE>
