<p>PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound from synthetic gas, economically, without increasing the production of harmful methane, by using a catalyst prepared by reducing a main catalyst composed of rhodium, and selectively modifying the catalyst in the presence of iron, etc. under the reaction condition of the synthetic gas. CONSTITUTION:Ethanol useful as an industrial product is produced by making synthetic gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen with contact a supported catalyst containing rhodium as the main catalyst component, iron as the cocatalyst component, and preferably silica as the carrier. The catalyst of the above reaction is the one prepared by reducing a main catalyst composed of rhodium, and modifying the catalyst selectively with iron in the presence of iron under the reaction condition of the synthetic gas. The hydrogenation activity of acetaldehyde can be improved selectively without causing the increase in the formation of methane harmful to the reaction, and the selectively of the objective compound can be improved by the use of the catalyst.</p> |
