PURPOSE:To synthetically improve monolith holding strength by a holding device and its sealing characteristic, by constituting a sealing member of the monolith holding device by a heat resisting gas seal and a thermal expansile elastic seal. CONSTITUTION:A monolith 16 is held in a case 14 by wire nets 17, first seal 18a, second seal 18b, cushion 19 and retainers 20. The first seal 18a, using a heat resisting gas seal mixing graphite in asbestos, prevents the second seal 18b in the downstream side from being brought into contact with exhaust. The second seal 18b, using a thermal expansile elastic seal binding a thermal expansive material of vermiculite or the like to ceramics fiber with an organic binder, partly holds the monolith 16 mainly in the radial direction. |
