<p>A steam, gas, or internal combustion engine includes a piston (28) reciprocable within a cylinder (30) and a rotatable output shaft (36), the piston being formed with a peripheral sinusoidal guideway (32) which cooperates with a follower (34) on the cylinder so that reciprocation of the piston is accompanied by continuous rotation thereof in one direction about the longitudinal axis of reciprocation. Coupling means (37, 39) are provided to transmit the rotation of the piston, as it reciprocates, to the output shaft. Similar apparatus may also act as a pump or compressor, in which case the shaft is an input shaft which is rotated to effect reciprocation of the piston.</p> |
