Core for a high-power fast-neutron nuclear reactor cooled with liquid sodium. The core comprises a fissile central zone 15 surrounded at its axial ends by layers of fertile material 16a, 16b and in its peripheral part by fertile assemblies 18. The core has a height H equal to at least 1.5 m and a diameter D such that the ratio H/D is between 0.40 and 0.55. The invention applies to reactors with a power of between 15,000 and 1,800 MWe. <IMAGE>
