Process for the preparation of citrate esters and their use for medical articles

Citric acid esters are formed using organic titanates as catalyst and removing excess alcohol. Four citric acid esters have been found which impart to PVC compositions advantageous plasticizer properties which comprise superior toxicity test results and superior soapsud extraction test results. The four citric acid esters are acetyl tri-n-hexyl citrate, n-butyryl tri-n-hexyl citrate, acetyl tri-n-(hexyl/octyl/decyl) citrate and acetyl tri-n-(octyl/decyl) citrate. Products produced from the plasticized PVC mixtures are extremely utilizable in the medicine and health precaution area, since they exhibit a toxicity of a low order of magnitude.
