An apparatus for discharging, especially metering, pulverulent or granular material from a storage container possesses at least two parallel conveying screws mounted on the bottom of the container and having contrary and mutually engaging screw threads which rotate in opposite directions, and a metering section which is tubular and one end of which is fixed around an outlet aperture in the container, while the other end is connected to a material receiving apparatus. The conveying screws extend through the outlet aperture and into the metering section, but end at a distance from the other end thereof. As a result a plug formation space is created, in which the material fed by the conveying screws can be compacted, forming a plug. The plug is forced out through the other end of the metering section and is received by the receiving apparatus. The plug formation space may have various members, for example friction members on the inner surface of the metering section, in order to facilitate the plug formation, and may also be of tapered design to this end.
