In a regenerative brake for a DC traction motor (1, 2), the armature (1), a reactor (3), a network thyristor controller (4) and a parallel circuit consisting of a capacitor (5) and a deactivable thryistor controller (6) can be connected in series to the network (N). The series circuit formed from armature (1) and reactor (3) can be by-passed by means of an armature thyristor controller (7) in such a way that when the armature thyristor controller is conductive the armature circuit is short-circuited and the reactor (3) is magnetically charged and, when the armature thyristor controller is disabled, is connected via the network thyristor controller (4) and the capacitor (5) and the energy stored in the reactor (3) is transmitted to the network (N). A control device for the motor voltage is provided by changing the exciter current, which device is fed a signal which is proportional to the armature current (Ja), a signal which is proportional to the speed (n) of the traction motor, a signal which is proportional to the voltage (U1) upstream of the capacitor (5), a signal which is proportional to the voltage (Un) downstream of the capacitor (5) and a signal which is proportional to the speed (n) of the traction motor. In the upper motor speed range in which the motor voltage produced is greater than or the same as the network voltage, the armature current thyristor controller (7) and the network thyristor controller (4) are alternately opened and closed in opposite directions. In this process, the entire kinetic energy of the vehicle can be fed back into the network largely without loss. <IMAGE>
