METHOD OF COMPOSITION FOR PROMOTING GROWTH OF BIFIDOBACTERIA

Oligosaccharide mixts., which improve the growth of bifidobacteria, were prepd. by reacting lactose with β-galactosidase originatig from Aspergillus niger. These oligosaccharides have the formula: Gal-(Gal) n-Glc, where Gal=galactose, Glc=glucose, and n=1-4. Thus, the nos. of Bifidobacterium breve and B. infantis in the feces of rats given daily doses of 2 x 10 bacteria and 20ml of a 5% soln. of the above oligosaccaride mixst. (TOS) were greatly increased over the nos. obsd. in the feces of controls not given TOS.
