The filter plates (1, 2, 3) of a filter press are locked together by means of a locking hook (15) mounted on each filter plate or a locking pin (20) which engages neighbouring filter plates. The filter plate (3) preceding these plates (1, 2) carries a latching element (24), engaging below the locking pin, having a stop cam (22) pivotably mounted against spring tension, which only releases the locking hook (15) for its opening movement when this preceding filter plate (3) is removed on opening the press. The release is further delayed by an additional rigid lug (31) of the latching element (24) until the filter plate which has been removed has also overcome the filter cake adhesion. <IMAGE>
