PURPOSE:To prepare beta type silicon carbide whisker in high quality in high yield economically, by blending carbonaceous powder with silicon dioxide powder, packing the blend into a reactor, heating it in an inert gas atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Carbonaceous powder is blended with silicon dioxide powder, and packed into a reactor in such a way that the packing bulk density is <=0.23 g/cm<2>. Then, the blend in the reactor is reacted under heating in an inert gas atmosphere. The inert gas is a gas such as argon, carbon monoxide, etc. which is chemically inert in this reaction system, and does not include a nitrogen gas and nitrogen compounds. A blending ratio of silicon dioxide powder and carbonaceous powder is a little bit excess of the carbonaceous powder than an equivalent amount of the reaction equation. This is because unreacted carbonaceous powder can be easily removed by oxidizing it under heating even if it exists, on the other hand, when silicon dioxide powder remains in an unreacted state, treatment with hydrofluoric acid is necessary to remove the remaining powder. |
