Two optical fibre cables 1,2 are connected in series with a device 10 containing optoelectronic repeaters therebetween. Each cable has a central tensile resistance member 3,4, optical fibres 5 radially outwardly thereof, and a water barrier sheath 6,7 radially outwardly of the optical fibres, but is devoid of any reinforcement against tensile and radial compressive loadings radially outwardly of the optical fibres. The device 10 is provided with a through-cavity 9 in which there is located a, or at least part of a, mechanical connection 8 connecting the cables' central members 3,4. The device is fixed relative to these central members and a watertight casing 16 sealingly connected with the cables' water barrier sheaths 6,7 extends over the device. <IMAGE> |
