The milling cutter is fixed to the spindle of a machine tool with the aid of a tool holder (3) with a spigot. The spigot (4) has a circumferential groove (5) and fits in a socket (6) which is screwed to the spindle (2) of the machine tool. The socket has radial holes for balls (10) which are pushed radially inwards into the groove in the spigot when the sleeve (11) surrounding the spigot is moved axially towards the tool. A mechanism, inside the housing (33) attached to the spindle, drives the sleeve towards the tool as the spigot is pushed into the socket.
