PURPOSE:To obtain an amphoteric ion exchange material having excellent performance, by using a block copolymer containing a polymer to which an anion exchange group can be introduced, and a polymer having aromatic ring, as a raw material, and subjecting the block copolymer to the anion exchange group introducing reaction and a cation exchange group introducing reaction in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A block copolymer containing (A) a polymer to which an anion exchange group can be introduced (e.g. a polymer of 2-vinylpyridine, etc.) and (B) a polymer having aromatic ring [e.g. the polymer of the monomer of formula I, II and III (R4 is H, etc.; R5 is H, etc.; X is halogen; Ar is aromatic ring)] is subjected to (1) to the anion exchange group introducing step and (2) the cation exchange group introducing step comprising the reaction with a polyfunctional compound having >=2 acid halide groups (e.g. carbonyl halide) or >=1 acid anhydride group (e.g. carboxylic acid anhydride), or >=1 each of the above groups, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (e.g. Lewis acid). The amounts of te polymers (A) and (B) in the block copolymer are >=5wt% each, preferably >=20wt% each. |
