Human monoclonal antibodies having the following essential characteristics: (a) they exhibit activity against Rh(D) antigen but not C, c, E or e antigens from the Rh blood typing system; (b) they are IgG3 proteins; (c) they have kappa light chains; (d) they have the allotype G3m(21); (e) they exhibit activity against DU cells in an indirect antiglobulin test; (f) they exhibit activity against DIV, DV and DVII variant antigens, and (g) they are inactive against DVI or DB variant antigens, can be used for determining the Rh type of red blood corpuscles and for passively immunizing with a view to preventing haemolytic disease of the new-born. A monoclonal antibody of this nature can, for example, be a monoclonal antibody from the cell line ECACC 86091606, which was deposited in the European collection of animal cell cultures, Porton Down, Great Britain, on 16 September 1987. <IMAGE>
