Control of exhaust valves and exhaust brake of an internal combustion engine

A throttle flap (7) for retarding exhaust gases during braking arranged in an exhaust gas duct (5) and the exhaust valves (47), Fig. 3, actuated by a cam shaft via rockers (52) have limiting devices (2), by means of which the stroke of the exhaust valves (47) is limited during braking to prevent the valves (47) from closing completely. To increase the engine braking power the stroke of the exhaust valves (47) is limited to an amount such that the slightly open exhaust valves achieve a braking effect. A valve (12), which is responsive to the brake-pedal travel (14) controls the throttle flap (7) and the limiting devices (2).
