<p>PURPOSE:To allow operation characteristics of the element based upon the bistability of liquid crystal and the monodomain property of a liquid crystal layer to consist together by providing a couple of substrates across a liquid crystal compound which consists of >=2 kinds of liquid crystal showing an Sm* including at least cholesteric liquid crystal, and performing a specific orientation treatment for at least either of the substrates. CONSTITUTION:The substrates 101 and 101' are held at a specific interval across spacers 104 and adhered together with an adhesive agent 106. Plural transparent electrodes 102 are formed on the substrate 101 and pluralf transparent electrodes 102' crossing the electrodes 102 are formed on the substrate 101'. An orientation control film 105 is formed on the substrate 101' by vapor-depositing SiO, SiO2, etc., and rubbed in one direction as the orientation treatment. The liquid crystal compound 13 consisting of >=2 kinds of liquid crystal having an Sm*A phase including liquid crystal showing the cholesteric phase is charged between the substrates 101 and 101'. Consequently, the liquid crystal element 100 which his both the operation characteristics of the element 100 based upon the bistability of the liquid crystal 103 and the monodomain property of the liquid crystal layer 103 is obtained.</p> |
