The integrated system is for reconditioning railway wheel sets. It consists of an underfloor CNC lathe, inspection and measuring equipment, vehicle lifting and positioning equipment and optimising computers for tool path and work sequence computations. Increased demands of train speed, passenger comfort and safety have meant that an axle by axle approach to wheel turning and reprofiling is no longer adequate. Smaller tolerances specified on a per vehicle basis require a three-stage process of inspection and measurement survey, computerised optimisation of the cutting process over all axles, and profile machining according to an optimum sequence of vehicle movements. USE/ADVANTAGE - Railway wheel reprofiling to closer per-vehicle tolerances. Material and time savings are achieved and wheel profiles are optimised for high-speed trains.
