Monolayer or multilayer systems containing a 1,5-diarylpenta-1,4-dien-3-one-palladium(O) complex of formula I <IMAGE> (I) wherein both the groups R1 independently of the other are hydrogen or C1-C4alkyl or both the groups R1 together are a polymethylene chain containing 2-4 C atoms, R2 is hydrogen, C1-C22alkyl, -N(R4)2, -NO2 or -CN, R3 is C1-C22alkyl, R4 is C1-C22alkyl, k=1-3.5, m=1-3 and p=1-3, are excellently suitable for electroless metallization, as sensors for H2 detection or as catalytically active surfaces for hydrogenation processes.
