3-cyano 6-methyl 5-(4-pyridinyl) 2-(1H)-pyridinone and its addn. salts with organic or inorganic salts or bases is made by a condensn. and cyclisation reaction of 4-pyridinyl-methyl methyl ketone with ethoxymethylene malonitrile. Reaction is carried out in a polar inert organic solvent such as a 1-5C aliphatic alcohol at reflux temp. for 6h. When complete, the prod. is filtered off and purified by re-crystallisation.
