The device is composed of an electro-optical measuring probe (1) which is encased by a completely enclosed housing (10). A freely movable container (13) with measuring liquid (9) is situated in the lower part (11) of the housing (10). Additional measuring liquid is also situated in the lower part (11) of the housing. The container (13) is connected to a permanent magnet (19). Outside the housing (10), there is arranged a second permanent magnet (20) which is actuated by a float (21). If the level, of the filling material, to be checked reaches the float (21), the latter, and therefore the magnets (19, 20), are raised until the measuring liquid (9) comes into contact with the lens (2), causing a measuring signal to be emitted. The lens (2) does not have any direct contact with the filling material and the measuring liquid (9) is protected against evaporation and outflow. The device is primarily intended for use with stored goods which are very adhesive, form residues or are corrosive, such as very heavy oil. <IMAGE>
