In order to detect oxygen in a packaging into which a material to be packaged has been introduced, and the oxygen has been excluded, whereupon the packaging has been sealed, the packaging is subjected to an external action in such a way that any oxygen gas present in the packaging is converted at least in part into ozone, which then in turn reacts, resulting in an observable effect, with at least one substance which has likewise been introduced into the packaging and is suitable for detecting ozone.
