Method of assembling the base of a chair 1, of a table or of a pedestal table, having an underframe 2 which is essentially foldable and consists of a tripod. The base is characterised in that the underside is fitted, symmetrically distributed around its periphery, with as many clamps 3 as there are legs 2. The end of each leg 4 comprises grooves 5 which can be pressure-fitted into the recess 10 formed by the clamp. Each clamp is provided with elastic locking means 6 and 6' preventing any inopportune disengagement. <IMAGE>
