PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent defect resistance and wear resistance, by orienting a Si3N4 whisker in parallel to the cutting face of a throw away tip. CONSTITUTION:A cutting tool having a throw away tip composed of an alphatype Al2O3 group ceramics including at 0.5-40wt.% one or two kinds of the carbide, nitride and carbonitride of Si, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta and W as well including 3-40wt.% Si3N4 whisker, is composed. The Si3N4 whisker is made to be oriented in parallel to the cutting face 1 of the throw away tip. Namely the Si3N4 whisker is made to be oriented two dimensionally in the cutting face 1 so that the axial direction of a needle like Si3N4 whisker becomes parallel to the cutting face 1. An extremely strong resistance force can be obtained against the cutting main component of force at cutting time, by orienting the Si3N4 whisker like this. An excellent defect resistance and wear resistance can thus be obtained. |
