PROCESS OF GASIFYING SOLID FUELS

The solid fuels are gasified in a fixed bed under a pressure of 5 to 150 bar with gasifying agents containing oxygen, steam and/or carbon dioxide. The incombustible mineral constituents remaining during the gasification are tapped as molten slag. Pulverised and fine-grained fuel is injected by means of a carrier gas into the lower region of the fixed bed. The pulverised and fine-grained fuel has a grain size range up to about 6 mm, at least 50% by weight of the fuel grains being smaller than 3 mm. Preferably, the carrier gas used is a methane-rich gas which consists of at least 30% by volume of methane. The carrier gas used can be a methane-rich off-gas from a synthesis plant, for example off-gas from a methanol synthesis or ammonia synthesis.
